WHEN EAST MEETS WEST

While in the San Francisco bay area a few weeks ago, I strolled into the world's smallest venue, about the size of some closets so expectations were minimized predicated on the equation synonymous with today's music, i.e., ability + capacity = payment. As Volker Strifler mounted the miniscule stage a distinct aura of who he was seemed to drift over the forty fans or so like a "cloak of cool", and soon after ward, Marke Burgstahler (Alameda All-stars‘) was asked to join Volker for a few tunes. It's been several decades since the apex of psychedelic and the euphoria that would exude from the denizens of San Francisco music. Once Marke began to play, this classic tandem would segue from various genres and send those watching into a frenzy that has long vanished with the banality of today's trend of useless , lurid rhetoric for lyrics and mediocrity with a chosen instrument. Conversation arose about Volker and Marke playing as a unique tandem, a restoration of quality musicians that were the mirrored images of The Fillmores and The Avalon Ballroom during the glory days of The Counter Culture. The result of two dynamic players resulted in an extraneous duet, an enigma in today's bay area evolution of greatness. One is more distinct with notes that resonate while the other seems more innovative while both expand the parameters of their chosen art form. One is more inhibited, one more charismatic but both convey the essential nuances of greatness, inclusive of talent, stage charisma, animation and charm. All these attributes could conceivably stamp both for musical success as the curse of all with an artistic gift is to languish in virtual obscurity. I only know both by this ninety minute foray into classic tunes, some written by Volker but I suspect if nurtured by those who are cognizant of their skills that their virtues and passion for music will vastly exceed limitations, assuming there are any. While pondering over forty years of images and subsequent editorials, I doubt I have ever seen to performers randomly play together with the "monster" type dexterity and chord changes of both Volker and Marke. These are the icons that can restore the credibility to a genre that needs a beacon in the sea of marginal musicians. Like all of those with allure and love of music, it now falls on the cult following to spread the word on what could be, after all, much like Bert Sommer was stated, "We're all playing in the same band".
