"Tom Constanten" The Grateful Dead _______________
Memories. Exalted. Precious. Unreachable. In our own
small way we grasp at them, store them, keep them,
decant them. We hold them up to the light, we check
them out from every angle of space and time. We
discuss, we reflect, we savor.
The arts and sciences of photography and sound
recording are scarcely more than a century old. Still,
they approach the miraculous, in the way they
reconnect us with people and places in the past.
Effortlessly, they enable us to vault over miles and
decades, enjoying the sights and sounds of places we'd
once known. Or even just wish we had.
Musical memories are especially precious, in that they
represent peak moments. They are feasts for the eyes
and the ears - a sparkling wine worthy of the finest
container.
These photographs by Don Aters are just such a
container. Drink deep and be welcome.

A Professional and an Amateur in the Best Sense of the
Word Don Aters was never in it for the money. He is an
amateur in the original sense of the word, a lover of
photography. Don photographed the birth
of a new social revolution in the 1960s because he had
a passion for the art of photography and because he
wanted to record the doings of his friends, people
like Janis Joplin, Peter Albin, Sam Andrew, Jack
Casady, Tom Constanten and the original, visionary
dreamer of the San Francisco Scene, Chet Helms. Don
Aters has camera, will travel, ranging all over the
country, documenting the activities of his fellow
travelers, spreading good cheer and greeting
every event with an infectious enthusiasm. These
photographs are his journal and they are compelling
and personal.
